Xiaomi PU7 Challenges Tesla Model Y in China EV Market
Xiaomi has launched the PU7 electric SUV in China, directly targeting Tesla's Model Y with comparable size and acceleration but significantly better range. Xiaomi has unveiled its highly anticipated PU7 electric SUV in China, positioning it as a formidable competitor to Tesla's Model Y in the world's largest EV market. This new model matches the Model Y in size and acceleration but surpasses it dramatically in driving range, a critical factor for EV buyers.
The PU7 offers up to 518 miles (835 km) of range on certain trims, significantly outpacing Tesla's Model Y variants, which top out around 479 miles. Acceleration is equally impressive, with the top PU7 model reaching 0-62 mph in just 3.23 seconds, matching Tesla's performance.
Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun emphasized that range is the primary concern for EV consumers, driving the company to engineer a sub-100 kWh battery SUV that leads its class. The PU7 features an 800-volt architecture capable of charging from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes and can add 385 miles of range in 15 minutes, a game-changer for fast charging.
Additional high-tech features include the Nvidia Drive AGX Thor computing platform and active air suspension, enhancing both performance and driving experience. The PU7 follows the successful SU7, which has sold over 200,000 units since March 2024, signaling Xiaomi's strong foothold in the EV market.
While the PU7's pricing remains undisclosed until July 2025, its combination of range, performance, and advanced technology positions it as a serious challenger to Tesla's dominance in China. This competition could reshape the EV landscape, pushing innovation and consumer choice to new heights.
