Uber Launches Senior Accounts with Simplified Design Nationwide
Uber has launched its new senior accounts across the US and select countries, offering a simplified app design with larger fonts and fewer buttons. These accounts include features like saved destinations, expanded payment options, and caregiver controls, making ride-hailing more accessible for older adults. This move reflects Uber’s commitment to serving a growing senior population with technology tailored to their needs.
Uber has officially rolled out its new senior accounts nationwide in the United States, along with availability in select international markets including Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, France, and South Africa. This launch follows a testing phase and represents a significant step toward making ride-hailing more accessible for older adults.
The new senior accounts feature a simplified design with larger typeface and fewer buttons, making the app easier to navigate for users who may find traditional interfaces overwhelming. This redesign acknowledges that by 2030, one in six people worldwide will be aged 60 or older, a demographic often underserved by technology.
Key features of Uber’s senior accounts include saved destinations for quick ride requests, expanded payment options such as Medicare flex cards, and the ability to designate family members or caregivers who can book rides, adjust settings, and contact drivers on the user’s behalf. Seniors can also opt to share their location with caregivers for added safety and peace of mind.
For users who want a simpler experience but are not linked to a family profile, Uber offers a Simple Mode toggle in the app’s Account section. This mode provides the same larger fonts and reduced complexity without the family account features.
Uber’s initiative is part of a broader industry trend to better serve older adults through tailored technology. For example, Lyft recently introduced “Lyft Silver” accounts with similar accessibility features, alongside more accessible vehicles and dedicated customer support staffed by humans.
Previously, Uber experimented with a toll-free phone number for ride requests aimed at seniors, but the pilot was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the company has introduced a new toll-free number, 1-833-USE-UBER, to accommodate users who prefer calling over app use.
By focusing on accessibility, Uber is not only improving the user experience for seniors but also addressing a growing market segment that demands thoughtful design and inclusive features. This approach highlights how technology companies can innovate to meet the needs of diverse age groups, ensuring that digital services remain usable and welcoming for everyone.
