Seagate Launches 4TB Xbox Expansion Card at Premium Price

Seagate has unveiled a new 4TB storage expansion card designed specifically for the Xbox Series X and S consoles, marking the first new capacity addition since the company launched its 2TB and 512GB versions in late 2021.

Priced at $499.99, the 4TB card is notably more expensive than the Xbox Series S console itself, which starts at $379.99. However, a limited-time launch discount reduces the price to $429.99.

This expansion addresses the growing storage demands of modern games, which can consume hundreds of gigabytes each. Titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Microsoft Flight Simulator require substantial space, making the 4TB option attractive for avid gamers with extensive libraries.

While external USB drives offer a cheaper way to increase storage, they do not support playing games directly from the drive. Only the proprietary expansion cards enable seamless gameplay without file transfers.

Seagate’s 2TB card, once priced at $399.99, now sells for around $249.99 with promotions, highlighting a potential price drop path for the new 4TB model.

Competition has emerged with Western Digital entering the Xbox expansion card market in mid-2023, offering similar capacities and pricing, though it has yet to release a 4TB option.

Compared to PlayStation 5 storage expansions, Xbox expansion cards remain pricier. The PS5 allows any SSD meeting performance standards, with Western Digital selling a 4TB PS5-compatible SSD for $339.99 and an 8TB option for $699.99.

For gamers and tech enthusiasts, the 4TB expansion card offers a convenient, high-speed solution for managing large game libraries without the hassle of transferring files. However, its premium price may encourage some to wait for discounts or consider alternatives.
