Meta Launches Separate DM Inbox for Threads Users
Meta is rolling out a dedicated direct message inbox for its Threads social network, allowing users to chat without switching to Instagram. Initially tested in select countries, the feature supports one-on-one conversations and addresses the unique follower networks on Threads. This move comes as competitors enhance their messaging capabilities, marking a significant step for Threads' independent growth.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads, the company’s social networking app, will soon test a standalone direct message (DM) inbox separate from Instagram’s DM system. This update means Threads users can now chat directly within the app without needing to switch to Instagram, addressing a long-standing user request.
The feature is initially launching in limited regions including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans for broader rollout. Currently, the DM functionality supports only one-on-one conversations, excluding group chats for now.
This development is significant because Threads users often have different follower bases than on Instagram, and some may rarely use Instagram at all. Previously, Threads relied heavily on Instagram’s network effects for connectivity, but over time, users have formed distinct networks on Threads, influenced by its public and short-form content style.
