Apple released iOS 18.5 on May 12, following the iOS 18.4 update. While the previous update focused on adding more emoji, iOS 18.5 introduces subtle but meaningful improvements including a new Pride wallpaper, Mail app enhancements, satellite communication features for iPhone 13 models, and important bug fixes and security patches.

New Pride Wallpaper

Continuing its tradition ahead of Pride Month, Apple introduced the "Pride Harmony" wallpaper in iOS 18.5. This dynamic wallpaper features bold stripes that shift and move as the user changes the phone’s orientation, offering a vibrant and interactive way to celebrate Pride.

Mail App Enhancements

iOS 18.5 makes it easier to manage contact photos in the Mail app. Users can now toggle the display of contact photos directly within the app’s interface, streamlining inbox appearance. Additionally, the update improves category navigation by introducing a small tab that reveals the “All Mail” category, allowing users to view emails without categorization, similar to the classic List View.

Satellite Features Extended to iPhone 13

A significant addition in iOS 18.5 is the availability of satellite messaging features for all iPhone 13 models. This allows users to send messages even when off the grid, enhancing safety and connectivity. Currently, these features depend on carrier support and are available in the US through T-Mobile’s Starlink beta program, which is free until July before becoming a paid service.

Accessibility and Bug Fixes

The update introduces a new option to display a banner when using the Back Tap accessibility feature, providing visual feedback when double or triple tapping the iPhone’s back. Additionally, iOS 18.5 includes various bug fixes such as resolving an issue where the Apple Vision Pro app might show a black screen, and security patches to keep devices safe.

To update, users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts. Note that some features, like Apple Intelligence, remain exclusive to the latest iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models.

Overall, iOS 18.5 focuses on enhancing user experience with subtle UI improvements, expanding satellite communication capabilities to older models, and maintaining device security through essential patches. These updates reflect Apple's commitment to accessibility, connectivity, and inclusivity.
