Google Transforms Search with AI Agents Revolutionizing Web Access

For over twenty years, Google Search has relied on algorithmically ranked links to connect users with web content. However, at I/O 2025, Google announced a fundamental shift away from this model towards an AI-driven approach that leverages intelligent agents to interact with the web on users’ behalf.

Google’s new AI mode, now available to all U.S. Search users, allows people to engage conversationally with AI agents that can visit websites, summarize content, assist with shopping, and perform complex tasks simultaneously. Premium users benefit from Project Mariner, an AI agent capable of multitasking across multiple web pages while users focus elsewhere.

Enhancements to Google’s Deep Research agent integrate personalized data from Gmail and Drive, enabling comprehensive, tailored research reports. Additionally, Project Astra’s multimodal AI capabilities allow users to interact verbally and visually with AI agents, further enriching the search experience.

This transformation is a response to the rise of AI conversational tools like ChatGPT, prompting Google to rethink how information is delivered online. The company is also building infrastructure to support AI agents, including native support for Anthropic’s MCP standard, facilitating agent connectivity across the internet.

Industry leaders like Microsoft also envision an “open agentic web,” where AI agents act autonomously across platforms, connected by protocols such as Google’s Agent2Agent and Anthropic’s MCP. This collaborative ecosystem could redefine how users interact with digital services.

However, this shift raises significant challenges. AI agents bypass traditional web browsing, threatening the ad-supported revenue models of many publishers. While e-commerce platforms may benefit from agents as new customer channels, content creators face potential revenue loss, risking the sustainability of quality web content.

Moreover, AI hallucinations—where models generate incorrect or fabricated information—remain a critical concern. Google’s previous AI overview rollout exposed these flaws, and experts like DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis emphasize the need for greater consistency before AI can be considered truly general intelligence.

The widespread adoption of AI agents could reshape user trust in online information and influence the spread of misinformation. Despite these risks, Google is advancing aggressively with AI agents, signaling a pivotal moment in the evolution of the web and search.

Google’s leadership in stewarding the web is now being redefined through AI agents that mediate how users access and interact with information.
