Mistral Launches Devstral AI Model to Boost Coding Productivity

Mistral, an AI startup founded in 2023, has unveiled Devstral, a new AI model specifically designed to enhance software development workflows. Developed in collaboration with All Hands AI, Devstral is openly available under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing unrestricted commercial use. This openness marks a significant step in democratizing access to advanced AI coding tools.

Devstral outperforms other open-source coding models such as Google’s Gemma 3 27B and DeepSeek’s V3 on the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, which evaluates coding proficiency. Mistral highlights Devstral’s strengths in navigating complex codebases, editing multiple files simultaneously, and powering software engineering agents that automate development tasks.

A key advantage of Devstral is its efficiency; it can run on a single Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU or even on a Mac with 32GB of RAM. This makes it accessible for local deployment and on-device use, reducing reliance on cloud infrastructure and enabling developers to maintain greater control over their coding environments.

The launch of Devstral comes amid a surge in AI coding assistants and models optimized for programming tasks. Industry leaders like Google, OpenAI, and JetBrains have recently introduced similar tools, reflecting growing developer demand. Despite challenges such as occasional security vulnerabilities and logical errors in AI-generated code, adoption is accelerating, with 76% of developers using or planning to use AI tools in their workflows.

Previously, Mistral released Codestral, a generative coding model with restrictive licensing that barred commercial internal use. Devstral removes these barriers, offering a "research preview" available for download on platforms like Hugging Face and accessible via Mistral’s API. Pricing is competitive, based on input and output tokens, making it viable for a range of development projects.

At 24 billion parameters, Devstral balances size and performance, making it powerful yet efficient. Mistral is actively developing a larger agentic coding model, promising even more advanced capabilities soon. Beyond Devstral, Mistral’s portfolio includes Mistral Medium 3, a general-purpose AI model, and Le Chat Enterprise, a corporate chatbot integrating AI with popular productivity tools.

Mistral’s rapid innovation and substantial funding—over €1.1 billion raised—position it as a key player in AI-driven software development. Its clients include major enterprises such as BNP Paribas and AXA, underscoring the commercial viability and trust in its AI solutions.
