During Google I/O 2025, Google announced significant enhancements to its Gemini AI chatbot app, focusing on expanding multimodal AI features and deeper integrations with its ecosystem. These updates position Gemini as a strong competitor in the AI assistant space dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s Siri.
A standout feature is Gemini Live’s new camera and screen-sharing capabilities, powered by Project Astra, now available to all iOS and Android users. This allows users to engage in near-real-time verbal conversations with Gemini while streaming video from their device’s camera or screen. For example, users can explore a city by pointing their phone at landmarks and instantly receive detailed information about architecture or history.
In the coming weeks, Gemini Live will integrate more deeply with Google’s suite of apps, enabling features such as:
- Providing directions through Google Maps
- Creating events in Google Calendar
- Making to-do lists with Google Tasks
These integrations will enhance productivity by allowing users to interact with multiple Google services seamlessly through conversational AI.
Google also introduced two new AI subscription plans to cater to different user needs:
- Google AI Pro: A rebranded $20/month plan offering advanced Gemini features.
- Google AI Ultra: A premium $250/month plan providing very high rate limits, early access to new AI models, and exclusive features, including the latest AI video model Veo 3 with native audio generation.
Subscribers in the U.S. using English in Chrome will soon access Gemini directly in their browser, enabling them to ask Gemini to summarize or answer questions about on-screen content, enhancing browsing efficiency.
Google is also enhancing Deep Research, Gemini’s AI agent for generating comprehensive reports. Users can upload private PDFs and images, which Deep Research cross-references with public data to create personalized reports. Future updates will integrate Google Drive and Gmail for even richer data sources.
Free users benefit from an updated AI image model, Imagen 4, which improves text-to-image outputs. Meanwhile, Ultra subscribers gain access to Veo 3, capable of generating videos with synchronized soundtracks, pushing the boundaries of AI-generated multimedia.
To support educational users, Gemini now offers personalized quizzes targeting areas where users struggle. When users answer incorrectly, Gemini generates additional quizzes and tailored action plans to reinforce learning, showcasing AI’s role in personalized education.
