Duolingo Introduces Energy System to Boost Language Learning Motivation

Duolingo, recognized as one of the best language learning apps by CNET, has introduced a significant update to its free version that aims to enhance the user learning experience. The new Energy system replaces the previous Hearts mechanic, shifting from a penalty-focused approach to one that rewards progress and encourages continuous learning.

Previously, the Hearts system gave learners five hearts per day, deducting one for each incorrect answer. Running out of hearts halted progress until users practiced previous lessons to regain them, which could slow or stop learning momentum and cause frustration.

The new Energy system starts learners with 25 energy units. Incorrect answers still reduce energy by one unit, but energy now recharges over time and can be earned through positive actions such as answering questions correctly in streaks, watching ads, or unlocking treasure chests within the app. This design encourages persistence and rewards accuracy, making the learning process more engaging and less punitive.

Moses Wayne, a senior software engineer at Duolingo and the creator of the Energy system, emphasizes that this mechanic is intended to make learning more fun and fair. By rewarding learners for doing well rather than penalizing mistakes, Duolingo aims to keep users motivated and engaged, even when they struggle with certain lessons.

This update is currently rolling out to iOS users, with Android users expected to receive it later this year. Early feedback indicates that learners are engaging more with the app under the Energy system than they did with Hearts, suggesting improved user retention and satisfaction.

For language learners, this change could reduce frustration and prevent stalled progress caused by repeated mistakes, making it easier to maintain momentum and reach learning goals.
