Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remakes Launch in October
Square Enix is bringing remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 in stunning HD-2D style, launching October 30th on PS5, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. These remakes feature refined battles, quality-of-life improvements, and new story content. A digital trilogy collection including Dragon Quest 3 will also be available for fans to complete the saga.
Square Enix has announced the upcoming release of remakes for the first two Dragon Quest games, titled Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, scheduled for October 30th, 2025. These remakes will be available across multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, and both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2.
Following the success of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake, which was praised for blending classic RPG gameplay with modern visuals and sound enhancements, Square Enix continues this approach. The new remakes promise beautiful HD-2D graphics, a refined battle system, numerous quality-of-life updates, and significant additions to the story.
While specific details about the new content have yet to be revealed, fans can anticipate fresh experiences that expand on the original narratives. This continuation is particularly meaningful because the storyline chronology starts with Dragon Quest III, set years before the events of Dragon Quest I and II, which follow the descendants of the hero from the third game.
To complete the saga, Square Enix will also release a digital-only Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection, bundling all three remakes for $99.99. This collection offers newcomers and longtime fans alike the opportunity to experience the full story arc in a visually stunning and modernized format.
The continuation of the HD-2D series highlights a growing trend in game development: revitalizing classic titles with modern aesthetics and gameplay improvements while preserving their original charm. This approach not only attracts new players but also satisfies nostalgic fans eager to revisit beloved games with enhanced experiences.
For developers and studios, the success of these remakes underscores the value of combining retro design elements with contemporary technology. It opens doors to innovative storytelling and gameplay mechanics that honor the past while embracing the future.
