Yale's New Smart Lock Integrates Seamlessly with Google Nest and More
Yale's new smart lock, powered by Matter-over-Thread, integrates with Google Nest and other smart home platforms, marking a shift towards open standards. This lock offers a full-deadbolt replacement with a keypad and keyway, available in multiple finishes. It can be managed via various apps and boasts up to 12 months of battery life. QuarkyByte provides insights into leveraging such innovations for enhanced security and convenience.
Yale has unveiled its latest smart lock, designed to integrate seamlessly with Google’s Nest video doorbells. This new lock, powered by Matter-over-Thread technology, is not only compatible with Google Home but also works with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and any other Matter-enabled smart home platform. This marks a significant step towards interoperability in the smart home industry, highlighting Google's shift towards embracing open standards.
The new Yale Smart Lock replaces the Nest x Yale Lock and offers a full-deadbolt replacement with a keypad and keyway for access. Available in gray, white, and black, it complements the finishes of various doorbells, including Google’s Nest. Priced at $170, the lock is set to launch this summer.
Yale's smart lock can be managed through the Yale Access app over Bluetooth, the Google Home app, or any Matter-certified smart home app via a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. It boasts up to 12 months of battery life on four AA batteries. While it lacks built-in Wi-Fi, users can purchase a Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge for added connectivity if needed.
Through Matter, the lock allows users to manage passcodes, schedule guest access, set up auto-lock, and receive battery life alerts and notifications for lock events. Users can also view a history of lock activity. Although the lock is optimized for Google Home, it offers a comprehensive feature set across other Matter platforms, ensuring versatility.
This is Yale’s second Matter-enabled smart lock, following the launch of the Yale Assure SL with Matter-over-Thread last year. The company plans to upgrade its Yale Approach retrofit smart lock to work with Matter-over-Thread soon. Despite discontinuing the Nest x Yale Lock, Yale and Google assure users that the device will continue to receive software and security updates.
