Nintendo has officially opened preorders for the wireless GameCube controller designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. This controller is set to launch alongside the console on June 5th, 2025, and is priced at $64.99. To maintain availability, purchases are limited to one controller per Switch Online account, reflecting the high demand among fans and collectors.
Unlike previous GameCube controller support on the original Switch, which required a USB adapter, this new controller is wireless and connects directly to the Switch 2. However, its compatibility is currently limited to GameCube games available through the Switch Online Expansion Pack tier, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Soulcalibur 2. It is not confirmed to work with backward-compatible Switch titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The controller features USB-C charging for convenience and includes a dedicated C button designed to activate GameChat features. Nintendo has announced that GameChat will be free for all Switch 2 owners until March 31st, 2026, enhancing multiplayer communication for supported games.
Implications for Developers and Gamers
The release of a wireless GameCube controller tailored for the Switch 2 highlights Nintendo’s commitment to preserving classic gaming experiences while integrating modern technology. For developers, this presents opportunities to optimize game compatibility and enhance user interaction through dedicated hardware features like GameChat. Gamers benefit from a nostalgic yet updated control scheme that supports a curated library of GameCube titles on a new platform.
As the Switch 2 ecosystem evolves, understanding hardware-software integration will be crucial for maximizing the gaming experience. The wireless GameCube controller is a strategic addition that bridges classic gameplay with modern convenience, setting a precedent for future accessory development.
