Walmart is taking a giant leap into the future of retail by expanding its drone delivery service powered by Wing, the Alphabet-owned drone delivery company. This expansion will bring drone deliveries to more than 100 Walmart stores across five new cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa, while also growing its existing presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

This bold move underscores Walmart’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of convenience and redefining retail. Greg Cathey, Walmart’s senior vice president of U.S. Transformation and Innovation, emphasized that drone delivery is a key part of making shopping faster and easier than ever before.

Wing’s journey from an experimental project within Alphabet’s X lab to a commercial enterprise is now accelerating. After launching a pilot program in 2023 at two Walmart stores in Dallas-Fort Worth that served roughly 60,000 homes, Wing expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters in the region. The newly announced expansion represents nearly a five-fold increase in Wing’s Walmart operations.

Adam Woodworth, Wing’s CEO, shared that the company is moving decisively out of the pilot phase and into scaling up its business. The experience in Dallas-Fort Worth has informed their strategy for replicating success across new markets, focusing on efficiency and cost control.

Wing’s business model centers on small, lightweight, automated drones designed to keep operational costs low. The challenge lies in scaling the number of drones and flights without proportionally increasing personnel costs. By expanding to more locations, Wing aims to spread fixed costs over a larger number of deliveries, improving profitability.

Beyond retail, Wing is also venturing into restaurant food delivery through a partnership with DoorDash. Since 2022, they have launched drone deliveries in Australia and expanded to U.S. cities like Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte, demonstrating the versatility of drone delivery technology across industries.

The expansion of drone delivery services by Walmart and Wing signals a transformative shift in logistics and customer experience. It highlights how integrating IoT-enabled autonomous drones can unlock new efficiencies and convenience in retail and food delivery sectors.
