If you've recently noticed a new light-blue circle in your WhatsApp chats, you're not alone. This is the Meta AI button, an in-app chatbot add-on that Meta has expanded into new markets. Initially launched in the US and Canada in 2023, it is now available in several countries across Europe, including the UK, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India. This AI-based chatbot is part of Meta's broader ecosystem, appearing in platforms like Messenger and Instagram. It offers basic functionalities such as answering questions, generating text, and creating content. However, its introduction has sparked privacy concerns among users who are unsure about how their data is being used and whether the feature can be disabled.

The Meta AI button is prominently placed above the new chat icon on Android and in the bottom-right corner on iOS devices. It allows users to interact with the Meta AI assistant directly. Users can tag @Meta AI in their chats to ask questions, and it will appear in their personal contact lists. The chatbot is powered by Meta's open-source language model, Llama 3.2, and currently offers a limited set of features focused on text generation and web searches. More functionalities are expected in the future.

Regarding privacy, Meta assures users that the assistant cannot access or read the content of their messages unless explicitly asked for help. Even then, the messages remain end-to-end encrypted, and details are not linked to other Meta accounts like Facebook or Instagram. However, interactions with Meta AI are not encrypted, and Meta warns that any information shared with the AI may be used to improve its models. Users are advised not to send sensitive information to Meta AI.

For those who prefer not to use this feature, there is currently no option to disable or remove the Meta AI button from WhatsApp. Users can choose to ignore it, but the button will remain in the app. If you have interacted with Meta AI and wish to reset it, you can do so at an individual chat level or across all chats. To reset a single chat, type /reset-ai in the chat. To reset all chats, type /reset-all-ais in a chat with Meta AI. This will delete Meta AI's copy of messages and details from the chats, although your messages will remain.

If you've used Meta AI, it learns from your interactions to provide more accurate responses over time. You can view, correct, and delete the information it has about you through the chatbot's menu. To view your memory, start a chat with Meta AI, tap Meta AI > Memory, and then click View All. You can delete individual memories or all at once. To correct any incorrect information, simply inform Meta AI in a chat, and it will update its records.
