Uber has introduced a streamlined version of its smartphone app tailored specifically for senior riders. This update focuses on improving accessibility and ease of use for older adults by incorporating larger text, simplified navigation, and fewer options on the home screen to reduce complexity.

Key features include an easier way to find frequently visited destinations such as grocery stores and doctor's offices, and a new 'senior' profile setting under accessibility options. This profile setting builds on Uber’s existing adult and teen options, allowing for a more personalized and user-friendly experience.

Currently, the updated app is being tested in Phoenix and Orlando, with plans to expand to additional cities soon. The feature is accessible through the app’s accessibility settings in these markets, reflecting Uber’s commitment to inclusivity and user-centric design.

Beyond the app redesign, Uber offers additional services to support senior riders, such as Uber Assist, which provides extra help in select markets. Seniors can also designate a family organizer who can request rides, manage payments, and track trips in real time, enhancing safety and convenience.

Payment options for seniors include using their own credit cards or Medicare Flex cards for medical trips, making the service more accessible for healthcare-related transportation needs. Setting up a senior account is straightforward via the Account tab under Family settings in the app.

This initiative aligns with broader industry trends, as competitors like Lyft are reportedly developing similar features to serve older demographics. Third-party platforms such as GoGoGrandparent also facilitate ride-hailing access for seniors, indicating a growing market focus on this user segment.

According to James Hodgson, auto research director at ABI Research, enhancing the user experience for seniors is a strategic move to expand Uber’s monthly active user base and sustain revenue growth. Since ride-hailing services offer similar core functionality, differentiating through accessible design is a key competitive advantage.

Improving senior access not only broadens the customer base but also aligns ride-hailing companies with government objectives to enhance mobility for all citizens. This approach helps address public transportation gaps and supports social inclusion for older adults.
