Twitch Introduces Vertical Livestreams and 2K Streaming Beta
Twitch is rolling out vertical livestreams to improve mobile viewing in portrait mode and launching an open beta for 2K (1440p) streaming, offering richer detail and clarity. Additionally, Twitch will test a rewind feature to let viewers revisit live moments. These updates aim to enhance the streaming experience for creators and audiences alike.
Twitch is evolving its livestreaming capabilities with two major updates announced at TwitchCon Europe in 2025: vertical livestreams and a 2K streaming open beta. These innovations are designed to enhance the viewing experience, especially on mobile devices, and provide creators with higher-quality broadcast options.
Vertical Livestreams for Mobile Viewers
Recognizing that many viewers watch streams on their phones, Twitch is introducing vertical livestreams to optimize content for portrait mode. This means users will no longer have to rotate their devices or deal with awkward black bars when watching streams. The platform plans to allow streamers to offer both vertical and horizontal formats simultaneously, giving viewers flexibility in how they consume content.
The vertical streaming feature will begin testing with select channels in the summer of 2025, with a broader rollout expected later in the year. This dual-format approach could redefine how live content adapts to diverse viewing habits.
2K Streaming Open Beta Enhances Quality
Twitch is also launching an open beta for 2K streaming, allowing creators to broadcast at 1440p resolution. This upgrade offers a noticeable improvement over the standard 1080p streams, delivering richer detail, improved clarity, and better overall performance. Whether gaming, creating art, or chatting, streamers can now provide a more immersive viewing experience.
Previously, this feature was limited to a smaller beta group, but now it's available to all Twitch partners and affiliates, democratizing access to higher-quality streaming.
Rewind Feature for Live Streams
Another exciting addition is the ability to rewind live streams. This feature will allow viewers to go back and rewatch parts of a stream they might have missed or want to see again without interrupting the live broadcast. Twitch plans to test this with a limited audience starting in the summer of 2025.
This rewind capability could significantly enhance viewer engagement and satisfaction, making live streams more accessible and user-friendly.
Together, these updates reflect Twitch's commitment to adapting to evolving viewer preferences and technological advancements, ensuring the platform remains a leader in live streaming innovation.
