Toyota is streamlining the name of its flagship electric vehicle from the bZ4X to simply the bZ for the 2026 model year. This change accompanies significant upgrades aimed at enhancing performance, range, and user experience to better compete in the growing electric SUV market.

One of the most notable improvements is the expanded battery capacity. The front-wheel drive bZ now offers a 74.7 kWh battery option delivering an estimated 314 miles on a single charge, while a smaller 57.7 kWh battery option provides 236 miles. These enhancements address one of the key challenges faced by the previous model, the bZ4X, which struggled with range limitations.

Charging convenience is also a major focus. Toyota has adopted Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), enabling the bZ to access Tesla Supercharger stations across the continent. Additionally, the vehicle supports Plug and Charge technology, allowing drivers to plug in at compatible third-party chargers and have their accounts automatically billed without the need for apps or QR codes. This seamless charging experience is a significant step forward in EV usability.

Performance enhancements include a 50% increase in horsepower for the all-wheel drive model, now delivering 338 combined system net horsepower. This boost is achieved through the integration of silicon carbide semiconductors in the motors, improving power delivery and enabling the bZ to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. These upgrades make the bZ more competitive in terms of driving dynamics.

The exterior design has been refined for a cleaner, more cohesive look. Toyota has removed the black wheel arches in favor of body-colored panels, enhancing the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal. Inside, the bZ features a redesigned center console and a new instrument panel with a larger 14-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, improving connectivity and convenience for drivers.

Built on Toyota’s E-TNGA platform, which it shares with the Lexus RZ 450e and Subaru Solterra, the bZ benefits from a proven electric vehicle architecture. Toyota is investing $1.3 billion in its Kentucky factory to ramp up EV production, including plans for a three-row SUV, signaling a strong commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

The bZ4X had a slow start but gained momentum through discounts and lease deals, with sales jumping from 1,897 units in Q1 2024 to 5,610 units in Q1 2025.
