TikTok has launched in-app guided meditation exercises aimed at helping users improve sleep quality and reduce late-night scrolling. For teens under 18, meditation prompts activate after 10pm, encouraging them to wind down with calming visuals and breathing exercises. Adults can enable the feature via Screen Time settings. TikTok has introduced a new in-app guided meditation feature designed to help users improve their sleep quality and reduce late-night app usage. This initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user well-being, particularly among its younger audience.

The meditation exercises were initially tested with select teenagers earlier this year and are now available to all users. For teens under 18, the feature is enabled by default. If a teen uses the app after 10pm, their For You feed is interrupted by a guided meditation session featuring calming visuals, soft music, and breathing exercises to encourage winding down for the night.

If teens choose to ignore the initial meditation prompt and continue scrolling, they receive a second full-screen message nudging them to go to sleep. This layered approach aims to gently discourage excessive late-night app use, addressing concerns about the impact of social media on teen sleep health.

Adults interested in the meditation feature can activate it manually via the app’s Screen Time settings by toggling the “sleep hours” option and selecting preferred times to receive the meditation prompts.

This feature is part of TikTok’s broader teen safety initiatives, responding to growing concerns from lawmakers and parents about the app’s influence on young users. In addition, TikTok announced a $2.3 million donation in ad credits to 31 mental health organizations across 19 countries, reinforcing its commitment to mental health education globally.

Broader Significance and Industry Impact

TikTok’s meditation feature exemplifies how social media platforms can integrate wellness tools directly into their user experience to promote healthier digital habits. This approach not only addresses public health concerns but also enhances user engagement by encouraging mindful app usage.

For developers and product managers, this highlights the growing importance of embedding behavioral nudges and wellness features in app design. Such innovations can improve user retention and satisfaction while aligning with regulatory expectations and social responsibility.

TikTok’s donation to mental health organizations also underscores the role tech companies can play in supporting global mental health initiatives, leveraging their platforms and resources to make a positive societal impact.
