TikTok Introduces Guided Meditation for Teens After 10PM to Promote Wellness
TikTok is enhancing its wellness features by introducing guided meditation prompts for users under 18 after 10PM. This update builds on its previous 'wind down' reminders, now including breathing exercises to help teens relax and reduce screen time at night. The feature is also available for adults who enable Sleep Hours. With 98% of teens continuing to use the meditation prompt after trying it, TikTok aims to promote healthier nighttime habits amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny.
TikTok has introduced a new feature that displays guided meditation prompts to users under 18 after 10PM. This initiative is designed to encourage healthier app usage habits during nighttime hours by promoting relaxation and mindfulness.
Previously, TikTok’s “wind down” prompt played calming music to remind teens to take breaks, but it was limited to users under 16. The new update expands this feature to include guided breathing exercises and meditation, and it applies to all users under 18 by default.
Additionally, adults who activate the “Sleep Hours” setting in TikTok’s Screen Time controls will also receive these meditation prompts, broadening the feature’s reach beyond teens.
During testing, TikTok found that 98% of users under 16 continued using the meditation feature after their first experience, indicating strong engagement and acceptance among younger audiences.
The app allows teens to dismiss the initial 10PM reminder, but a subsequent full-screen prompt appears later, which is more difficult to ignore, reinforcing the encouragement to take a mindful break.
This feature launch comes amid regulatory pressures on TikTok in the US, where the company faces a potential divestment deadline. Despite this, TikTok continues to prioritize user safety and wellness through tools like the Time Away feature, which lets parents restrict app access during certain hours.
TikTok’s integration of guided meditation reflects a broader trend in social media platforms adopting wellness features to combat excessive screen time and promote mental health, especially among younger users.
For developers and businesses, this move highlights the importance of embedding user-centric wellness tools that not only enhance engagement but also address growing concerns about digital wellbeing.
