Tencent Acquires WizardLM Team to Boost AI Model Development
The WizardLM AI research team, formerly part of Microsoft, has joined Tencent's Hunyuan AI division, enhancing Tencent's AI capabilities with models such as Hunyuan-TurboS 0416. Despite past setbacks involving toxicity testing and model removals, WizardLM continues to innovate under Tencent, which is heavily investing in AI infrastructure to drive growth and competitive advantage.
The AI research landscape is witnessing significant shifts as the Beijing-based WizardLM team, previously affiliated with Microsoft, has transitioned to Tencent’s Hunyuan AI division. This move marks a strategic enhancement for Tencent, a major player in gaming and social media, as it intensifies its AI development efforts.
Led by senior AI researcher Can Xu, the WizardLM team has already contributed to Tencent’s AI portfolio by releasing the Hunyuan-TurboS 0416 model. According to Qingfeng Sun, a co-founder of WizardLM, this model surpasses other open AI models such as Google’s Gemma 3 series in performance, signaling a competitive edge for Tencent’s AI offerings.
WizardLM’s history includes a notable incident in April 2024 when Microsoft removed the WizardLM-2 models from public access due to missing toxicity testing. Despite this, the models were widely downloaded and reuploaded by the community, highlighting strong demand and engagement within the AI developer ecosystem.
Tencent’s commitment to AI is underscored by its recent restructuring of the Hunyuan team and a substantial capital expenditure plan of approximately $12.5 billion in 2025, largely dedicated to AI infrastructure. This investment has already contributed to an 8% year-over-year revenue growth in Q1 2025, demonstrating the tangible business impact of AI initiatives.
The integration of WizardLM into Tencent’s AI ecosystem illustrates the growing trend of talent and technology consolidation in the AI sector. For developers and enterprises, this signals opportunities to engage with cutting-edge AI models and leverage Tencent’s expanding AI capabilities for innovative applications across gaming, social media, and beyond.
