Taiwan Boosts AI Climate and Quantum Research with New Nvidia Supercomputer
Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing is launching a powerful Nvidia-based supercomputer to accelerate AI, climate science, and quantum computing research. Featuring over 1,700 GPUs and advanced Nvidia platforms, it supports sovereign AI projects like Taiwan AI RAP and TAIDE, climate modeling with Earth-2, and quantum innovations using CUDA-Q. Taiwan is making significant strides in advancing artificial intelligence, climate science, and quantum computing through a new supercomputer at the National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC). Announced at Computex 2025 by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, this cutting-edge system delivers over eight times the AI performance of its predecessor, Taiwania 2, empowering researchers across academia, government, and industry.
The supercomputer integrates Nvidia HGX H200 systems with more than 1,700 GPUs, Nvidia GB200 NVL72 rack-scale systems, and the latest Nvidia HGX B300 platform based on Nvidia Blackwell Ultra architecture. These components are interconnected via Nvidia Quantum InfiniBand networking, ensuring ultra-fast data transfer and computational efficiency. Additionally, NCHC plans to deploy Nvidia DGX Spark personal AI supercomputers and cloud-based HGX clusters to broaden access and flexibility.
One of the supercomputer’s key missions is to support Taiwan’s sovereign AI initiatives, such as Taiwan AI RAP, a platform designed to accelerate AI product development with models tailored to local languages and culture. The Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE) project exemplifies this by creating large language models (LLMs) that serve natural language processing, intelligent customer service, and translation needs, leveraging data from government, media, and public sectors.
TAIDE models have been applied in diverse real-world scenarios: a conversational AI robot engages Taiwanese and English-speaking students, educational content generation tools reduce teachers’ preparation time, AI chatbots assist healthcare case managers with accurate patient information, and epidemic prevention centers generate timely news summaries to monitor disease spread. These applications highlight the supercomputer’s role in fostering practical, community-focused AI solutions.
In climate science, NCHC supports researchers using Nvidia’s Earth-2 platform to enhance weather and atmospheric models. Tools like CorrDiff AI and DeepMind’s GraphCast improve forecast precision, while Nvidia’s FourCastNet and GPU-accelerated numerical weather prediction models enable more detailed and faster simulations. The new supercomputer will significantly boost the scale and speed of these climate research efforts.
Quantum computing research at NCHC is advancing through Nvidia’s CUDA-Q platform and cuQuantum library, which facilitate quantum machine learning, chemistry simulations, finance modeling, and cryptography. Notable achievements include the Quantum Molecular Generator for chemical molecule creation and cuTN-QSVM, an open-source tool accelerating large-scale quantum circuit simulations. Recently, researchers achieved a record 784-qubit simulation, showcasing the supercomputer’s capacity to tackle complex quantum algorithms.
Looking ahead, NCHC plans to integrate Nvidia DGX Quantum systems to build hybrid quantum-accelerated computing infrastructure, further enhancing Taiwan’s capabilities in cutting-edge scientific computation. This initiative reflects Taiwan’s commitment to technological autonomy and global leadership in AI, climate science, and quantum innovation.
