Starlink Doubles Internet Speeds Amid Rapid Growth and Expansion

Starlink has nearly doubled its median download speeds from 54 Mbps in 2022 to over 104 Mbps today, despite adding 5 million customers. With over 7,600 satellites in orbit and plans for 42,000, Starlink is expanding broadband access, especially in rural areas supported by government subsidies. However, upload speeds and latency remain challenges for some users.

Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has nearly doubled its median download speeds over the past two years, reaching 104.71 Mbps in 2024 compared to 53.95 Mbps in 2022. This remarkable improvement comes alongside rapid customer growth, with the user base expanding by about 5 million to surpass 6 million globally.

This speed boost is largely due to a massive increase in satellite capacity. At the start of 2022, Starlink had approximately 1,761 satellites in orbit. Today, that number has surged to 7,607, with plans to eventually deploy up to 42,000 satellites. This expansion is critical to meeting growing demand and improving service quality.

Government programs like the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) initiative could channel up to $20 billion in subsidies to Starlink, particularly to enhance rural broadband access. This funding underscores the strategic importance of satellite internet in bridging connectivity gaps in hard-to-reach areas.

Despite these gains, challenges remain. Only about 17.4% of Starlink customers currently achieve the FCC’s minimum broadband standard of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload speeds. While download speeds are generally strong, median upload speeds lag at 14.84 Mbps, and latency averages 45 milliseconds—higher than the national average of 12 ms, which can affect activities like online gaming.

The user experience varies widely by region. For instance, states offering free Starlink equipment, such as South Dakota, Rhode Island, and Wyoming, report median download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps and higher compliance with broadband benchmarks. Conversely, areas like Alaska, Mississippi, and Louisiana see lower speeds and performance.

To manage congestion in high-demand regions like the Pacific Northwest, Starlink recently introduced a $500 "demand fee" for new customers, while continuing to provide free satellite dishes in less congested areas. This approach reflects the balancing act between scaling rapidly and maintaining service quality.

Maine’s initiative to distribute free Starlink dishes to residents in remote locations highlights the potential for satellite internet to address connectivity challenges in underserved communities. According to Maine Connectivity Authority officials, Starlink’s performance in these areas has met compliance standards, alleviating concerns about speed benchmarks.

Starlink’s rapid speed improvements and customer growth demonstrate the transformative potential of satellite internet.
