Players navigate through polluted canals, using various tools to restore the natural state of the waters. As the waters clear, rich vegetation and fish become visible, and larger fauna like dolphins may swim alongside your vessel.

The game emphasizes fun over overt messaging, with Cuenen aiming to subtly inspire players through engaging gameplay. Spilled! was showcased at the Day of the Devs during the Game Developers Conference in March 2025, highlighting its relaxing gameplay loop. Players collect trash and oil, turn them into floating collection barges, and receive tools to explore new areas in need of cleaning. While the game can be completed in an hour, its cozy vibes encourage repeated play.
