In a bold move to challenge TikTok, Skylight, a new startup, is launching its mobile app to the public after just 10 weeks of development. Backed by notable investors like Mark Cuban, Skylight is built on the AT Protocol, the same technology that powers the social network Bluesky. This innovative platform offers a short-form video experience with features such as an in-app video editor, the ability to comment, like, and share videos, and the option to follow other users. By leveraging the AT Protocol, Skylight connects users to Bluesky's extensive network of over 33.8 million users, allowing for seamless interaction across various ATProto-based apps.

The co-founders, Tori White and Reed Hermeyer, were inspired to create Skylight amidst concerns over potential TikTok bans in the U.S. White, a former travel influencer turned software developer, had already backed up her TikTok videos and was worried about losing her online community. The duo saw potential in the AT Protocol, which had proven reliable with Bluesky's success, and decided to build a 'ban-proof' social app.

White's influencer background played a crucial role in Skylight's development, as she documented the process on TikTok, gaining nearly 50,000 followers who became early testers. The app supports video uploads of up to three minutes and plans to introduce features like customizable feeds, new gestures, and support for sounds, duets, and playlists.

Currently in beta on the Google Play Store and available on Apple's App Store, Skylight is poised to become more than just a decentralized TikTok clone. It aims to offer a unique user experience with innovative features that set it apart from existing platforms. As Skylight continues to evolve, it represents a significant step forward in the world of decentralized social media, providing users with a robust and engaging alternative to traditional platforms.
