Pinterest Tackles AI-Generated Content with New Labeling and Control Features
Pinterest is addressing the surge of AI-generated and AI-modified images by introducing labels that identify such content and a new option allowing users to reduce AI Pins in their feeds. This move aims to preserve the platform’s user-generated content integrity and improve user experience by filtering out low-quality AI content often called “AI slop.” Pinterest plans to expand these controls and enhance detection methods to empower users and creators alike.
Pinterest is taking significant steps to address the growing problem of AI-generated and AI-modified images flooding its platform, a phenomenon often referred to as “AI slop.” This surge in generative AI content has led to user complaints and concerns about the dilution of authentic, human-created content that originally attracted users to the site.
To combat this, Pinterest announced a plan to label AI-generated and AI-modified images clearly. When users view an image Pin in detail, an “AI modified” label will appear in the bottom left corner, helping users distinguish AI content from human-made images. The company will use image metadata analysis and proprietary AI classifiers to detect AI content, even when obvious markers are absent. Creators will have the ability to appeal if their content is mislabeled.
More importantly, Pinterest plans to introduce a user control feature that allows individuals to reduce the number of generative AI Pins they see, starting with categories like beauty and art where AI content has become pervasive. This “see fewer” option will be accessible via a menu on each Pin and will signal Pinterest’s recommendation system to show less AI-generated content over time. The rollout date for this feature is forthcoming.
The influx of AI-generated images threatens the core value of Pinterest as a platform for authentic inspiration across fashion, home decor, travel, and more. Users have voiced frustration on social media and forums, with some even declaring the platform compromised by low-quality AI content. Media coverage has reflected on whether Pinterest can recover from this challenge.
Pinterest’s CTO Matt Madrigal emphasized the company’s commitment to empowering users with informed choices about AI content. He stated that generative AI can enhance discovery and inspiration when implemented thoughtfully. Pinterest plans to continue developing tools to refine AI content management and maintain a high-quality user experience.
This development highlights the broader challenge social platforms face in balancing innovative AI capabilities with preserving authentic user-generated content. As generative AI becomes more accessible, platforms must adopt transparent labeling, user controls, and advanced detection systems to maintain trust and engagement.
