Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has called for the withdrawal of a high-profile research paper on artificial intelligence due to significant concerns about the integrity and validity of its data and findings.
The paper, titled "Artificial Intelligence, Scientific Discovery, and Product Innovation," was authored by a doctoral student in MIT's economics program. It claimed that introducing an AI tool into a large, unnamed materials science laboratory led to an increase in new material discoveries and patent filings. However, it also reported a decrease in researchers' job satisfaction.
The paper initially received praise from notable economists, including Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu and David Autor, who described it as impactful and widely discussed despite not being published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Concerns were raised in January by a computer scientist familiar with materials science, prompting Acemoglu and Autor to alert MIT. An internal investigation was conducted, but due to student privacy laws, the details remain confidential.
Following the review, MIT stated it has no confidence in the paper's data provenance, reliability, or the truthfulness of its research. The author is no longer affiliated with MIT, and the university has requested the paper's withdrawal from both the Quarterly Journal of Economics and the preprint server arXiv.
