Microsoft Notepad Adds AI Writing Feature for Windows Insiders
Microsoft is introducing an AI-powered Write feature in Notepad for Windows 11 Insiders, enabling users to generate and refine text based on prompts. Alongside this, Paint gains AI sticker generation and smart object selection, while the Snipping Tool offers AI-driven cropping and color picking. These updates showcase Microsoft's push to embed AI across everyday tools.
Microsoft is rolling out a new AI-powered Write feature in Notepad, currently available to Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. This innovative tool allows users to generate text by simply providing a prompt, making drafting content faster and more intuitive.
Users can invoke the Write feature by right-clicking in a document or selecting existing text as a reference. The AI then produces content that can be accepted, discarded, or refined with additional prompts, offering a flexible writing assistant embedded directly within Notepad.
This new capability complements earlier AI tools in Notepad, such as Summarize, which condenses text, and Rewrite, which adjusts tone and phrasing. Together, these features transform Notepad from a simple text editor into a powerful AI writing companion.
AI Enhancements in Microsoft Paint
Alongside Notepad’s AI update, Microsoft Paint is receiving several AI-powered features. The new Sticker generator creates custom stickers based on user descriptions, which can be used within Paint or copied to other apps.
Additional tools like Generative Fill, Generative Erase, and Cocreator enable image creation and editing from text prompts and sketches, while the Object select tool uses AI to simplify isolating and manipulating elements in images.
Smarter Screenshots with Windows 11 Snipping Tool
Windows 11’s Snipping Tool now includes AI features like the Perfect screenshot button, which intelligently crops and resizes screenshots based on content selection. This reduces manual adjustments and speeds up sharing.
A new Color picker tool provides precise color values (HEX, RGB, HSL) with zoom capabilities, enhancing accuracy for designers and developers working directly from screenshots.
To use Notepad’s Write feature, users must sign in with a Microsoft account and utilize a credit system shared with other AI features in Windows 11. Pricing details for these credits have not yet been announced.
Microsoft’s integration of generative AI into everyday tools like Notepad, Paint, and Snipping Tool signals a shift toward AI-assisted productivity embedded directly into operating systems. This approach makes advanced AI accessible to a broad user base, from casual users to professionals.
