Microsoft Launches Free AI Video Creator with Fast and Standard Modes
Microsoft introduces Bing Video Creator, a free AI-powered tool that generates 5-second videos from text prompts in vertical format. Users can choose between fast, near-instant videos using Microsoft Rewards points or longer standard videos. Currently mobile-only, desktop support is coming soon. The tool joins a growing field of AI video generators, raising both creative opportunities and concerns over deepfake misuse.
Microsoft has unveiled the Bing Video Creator, a free AI-powered tool that transforms text prompts into short videos. In under a minute, users can generate a 5-second video, such as a floating Bing logo scene, showcasing the tool’s quick creative capabilities.
Currently, videos are limited to 5 seconds and a vertical 9:16 format, though Microsoft plans to add a horizontal 16:9 option soon. Users can select between a "fast" mode, which is nearly instantaneous but requires Microsoft Rewards points, and a "standard" mode that can take hours to process.
The feature is accessible via the Bing Search mobile app, with plans to expand to Windows desktops and integrate with Copilot Search. Powered by OpenAI's Sora video technology, Bing Video Creator joins a competitive field including tools like Adobe Firefly, Google Veo, Runway, and Meta Movie Gen.
Using the tool involves typing a prompt within the app’s Video Creator section or directly in the search bar. While the fast mode delivers quick results, video quality may be modest, and downloading videos directly from the app can be cumbersome. However, sharing links allows full video downloads, and creations remain available for 90 days.
AI Video Generation Landscape and Security Concerns
Bing Video Creator offers a free, accessible option for casual users entering AI video creation. Industry experts highlight Google's Veo 3 for Gemini as a leader in realism, with advances in object permanence and physics making AI videos increasingly indistinguishable from real footage.
However, this realism raises significant risks, including deepfake creation and identity hijacking. While AI video platforms implement guardrails to prevent misuse such as hate speech or copyright violations, experts warn that AI-generated videos are increasingly weaponized to impersonate individuals at scale.
As AI video technology evolves rapidly, balancing creative potential with ethical and security considerations will be crucial. Tools like Bing Video Creator mark an exciting step forward, but also a call to vigilance in how these capabilities are deployed and regulated.
