As Microsoft celebrates its 50th anniversary, it has unveiled a significant update to its AI assistant, Copilot, integrating a range of new features that align it with leading AI technologies like ChatGPT and Claude. This update introduces capabilities such as memory, personalization, web-based actions, podcast creation, and more, enhancing Copilot's functionality and user experience.

One of the standout features is Memory, which enables Copilot to remember user preferences, interests, and personal details such as birthdays. This allows the AI to provide tailored responses and proactive suggestions. Users have control over what information Copilot retains, with the option to opt out entirely. Microsoft emphasizes the personal nature of Copilot, suggesting future updates may allow users to customize its appearance.

The new Actions feature empowers Copilot to perform tasks through a web browser, similar to OpenAI's Operator agent or Amazon's Nova Act model. This includes booking tickets, reserving restaurants, and making purchases, complemented by new shopping functionalities that help users find discounts and sales.

Copilot Vision, initially launched in December 2024, is now available on Windows and mobile apps. It can analyze what's on a user's screen or camera, providing answers and interacting with visible content. On mobile devices, it can engage with photos in the camera roll.

Deep Research is another powerful addition, allowing Copilot to analyze extensive documents or online sources for complex projects. This feature is integrated with Bing, offering AI-powered responses within the search engine. Additionally, Copilot can generate podcast-style audio explanations and organize notes and research into a single canvas using the new Pages feature.

These updates demonstrate Microsoft's commitment to staying competitive in the AI landscape and maximizing its investment in OpenAI. The features are being rolled out in initial versions, with improvements expected in the coming weeks and months, varying by feature, platform, and market.
