Meta Launches Edits App to Compete with CapCut for Creators
Meta has launched Edits, a new video editing app designed to rival ByteDance’s CapCut. Available on iOS and Android, Edits integrates with Instagram and offers tools like green screen, automatic captions, and AI-powered animation. While CapCut currently offers more advanced features and a web version, Edits aims to grow its capabilities and capitalize on TikTok’s uncertain future in the U.S.
Meta has introduced a new video editing app called Edits, designed specifically for creators focused on short-form video content. This app aims to compete directly with ByteDance’s popular CapCut, which has been widely used by creators worldwide. Meta first announced Edits in January, coinciding with the temporary removal of CapCut from U.S. app stores amid TikTok-related regulatory uncertainties.
Edits is available for both iOS and Android devices and requires users to log in with their Instagram accounts. The app features five main tabs to support creators throughout the video production process:
- Ideas: A space to jot down video concepts and save reels.
- Inspiration: Hub for discovering trending audios and popular reels.
- Projects: Store and revisit ongoing video projects and upload clips.
- Record: Film video content directly within the app.
- Insights: View performance metrics such as views, reach, and follower counts.
Edits offers a robust set of editing tools tailored for creators, including:
- Green screen: Easily replace video backgrounds with a single tap.
- Automatic captions in multiple languages to enhance accessibility.
- AI-powered animation to turn static images into dynamic videos.
- Audio library integration with Instagram’s music collection.
- Filters, transitions, alignment guides, beat markers, and timeline frame rate selector for precise editing.
Comparing Edits to CapCut reveals some key differences. CapCut currently offers more advanced AI features and a broader music library, as well as a web-based version, which Edits lacks. CapCut also has a subscription model for premium tools, whereas Edits is free for now but may introduce paid features later, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
As TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain, Meta’s Edits is positioned to capture creators seeking a reliable, integrated video editing tool within the Instagram ecosystem. While still in its early stages, Edits is expected to evolve with more sophisticated features, making it a compelling alternative for short-form video creators.
