Lime, a leading shared micromobility company, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with Redwood Materials for battery recycling. This collaboration will see batteries from Lime's scooters and e-bikes in the United States, Germany, and The Netherlands sent to Redwood Materials. The Nevada-based startup, founded by former Tesla CFO JB Straubel, specializes in extracting and recycling critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper from used batteries. This initiative marks the first direct relationship Lime has established with a North American battery recycler, aiming to process materials for recovery and reintegrate them into the supply chain.
Redwood Materials' closed-loop manufacturing system is designed to reduce the demand for mining and refining new minerals by reintroducing recycled materials into battery production. This aligns perfectly with Lime's sustainability goals, which include decarbonizing its operations by 2030. Over the past five years, Lime has successfully reduced its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 59.5% from its 2019 baseline. The company plans to report its 2024 carbon emissions results in May.
Andrew Savage, Lime's VP for Sustainability, emphasized the importance of this partnership in creating a more circular supply chain. By ensuring that batteries are responsibly recycled and their materials returned to the supply chain, Lime is making strides toward a sustainable future. In addition to its partnership with Redwood Materials, Lime collaborates with Gomi in the UK and VoltR in France to repurpose viable battery cells for "second life" applications, such as consumer electronics.
Redwood Materials is not new to the micromobility sector, having agreements with other companies like Lyft, Rad Power Bikes, and Specialized for battery recycling. With over $2 billion raised in private funds, Redwood recently opened an R&D center in San Francisco to further its mission.
