LG Ends Smartphone Update Support and LG Bridge App in June 2024

LG officially exited the smartphone market in 2021 but committed to supporting existing devices with software updates for three years. This support period has now come to an end as LG announced it will shut down its smartphone update servers and the LG Bridge PC application on June 30, 2024.

After this shutdown, LG smartphone users will no longer be able to install new Android OS updates or security patches. The last available upgrades will be limited to Android 12 or Android 13, depending on the device model. Additionally, the LG Bridge app, which facilitates data backups, contact management, and software updates via PC, will also be discontinued.

Mobile analyst Avi Greengart highlights that LG extended support beyond typical industry timelines, where consumers generally replace phones every two to three years. However, modern smartphones are now seeing longer usage periods and extended update commitments from manufacturers like Samsung, which promises up to eight years of OS and security updates.

Although the end of LG’s update support affects a small user base, it signals a critical moment for those still using LG devices to consider upgrading. Greengart advises that when security updates cease, users should transition to newer models to maintain device security and access new features.

Some users remain loyal to LG phones due to unique hardware features such as rear fingerprint sensors and dual-screen covers. Greengart recommends exploring alternatives with secure biometric options like side-mounted fingerprint readers or face ID, citing large foldable phones from Samsung, Google, OPPO, and HONOR as viable options.

With LG’s exit from smartphone updates, users and businesses must plan for device upgrades and data migration. This transition underscores the importance of choosing devices with long-term software support to ensure security and functionality over time.
