Jony Ive Critiques AI Gadgets as He Prepares New Device
Jony Ive, former Apple design chief, criticized last year’s AI gadgets—the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin—as poor products lacking innovation. As he partners with Sam Altman on a new AI device set for 2026, Ive emphasizes the need for fresh thinking in AI hardware design. Meanwhile, Rabbit and Humane face challenges with their AI offerings.
Jony Ive, the former chief designer at Apple, recently shared his candid views on the state of AI hardware products released last year. Speaking to Bloomberg, Ive described the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin as "very poor products," highlighting a significant lack of innovation in their design and functionality.
These devices, which aimed to introduce new AI personal assistant experiences, failed to meet expectations. Early reviews supported Ive’s critique, with the Humane AI Pin criticized for not working effectively and the Rabbit R1 seen as a less functional smartphone alternative. Such feedback underscores the challenges in creating compelling AI hardware that resonates with users.
The Humane AI Pin has since been discontinued following an acquihire by HP, with all devices shut down earlier this year. Meanwhile, the Rabbit R1 continues to evolve, recently introducing a memory log feature to improve contextual AI interactions and offering a free trial of its AI-native operating system, Intern, even for users without the device.
Looking ahead, Jony Ive is collaborating with OpenAI’s Sam Altman on a new AI gadget expected to launch in 2026. This partnership aims to bring fresh design perspectives and innovative AI integration, addressing the shortcomings seen in previous attempts by other companies.
The Importance of Innovation in AI Hardware
Ive’s critique highlights a broader issue in the AI hardware market: the need for truly innovative products that offer new ways of interacting with AI. The failures of the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin serve as cautionary tales about the risks of launching products without sufficient user-centric design and functional reliability.
For developers and businesses, this underscores the importance of integrating design excellence with AI capabilities. Products must not only leverage advanced AI but also deliver seamless, intuitive user experiences to gain market traction.
