The Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) esports tournament, a flagship event owned by ESL FaceIt Group under Savvy Games Group, is making a significant move from Katowice to Kraków, Poland, starting in 2026. This transition marks a pivotal moment in the tournament's 19-year legacy, which began in Hannover, Germany, and has grown into the longest-running professional esports circuit globally.
This relocation is not just a change of venue but a strategic evolution to accommodate a larger audience and enhance the live, in-arena experience. The Tauron Arena in Kraków will host the final three days of the tournament from February 6 to February 8, 2026, welcoming thousands of passionate fans to witness world-class Counter-Strike 2 action.
The economic impact of IEM events is substantial, generating over $40 million for host cities. Impressively, more than 73% of visitors attend primarily because of the ESL esports events, highlighting the tournament's ability to drive tourism and business investment. Kraków's mayor, Aleksander Miszalski, emphasized the city's pride in blending royal history with innovation, viewing IEM Kraków as a platform to showcase the city to global audiences.
The tournament will feature the world’s best 24 Counter-Strike 2 teams competing for a total prize pool of $1,250,000. The competition will begin on January 27, 2026, with teams battling for six coveted playoff spots. The event promises to elevate the fan experience while honoring the rich heritage of the IEM series.
In the lead-up to the tournament, fans in Kraków will have unique opportunities to engage with the event's iconic trophy. From May 30 to June 2, 2025, the Intel Extreme Masters trophy will be displayed at Galeria Krakowska, followed by a two-week exhibition at Kraków City Hall starting June 8. These events aim to build excitement and deepen community connection ahead of the tournament.
Michal Blicharz, VP of Product Development at ESL FaceIt Group, highlighted the significance of this new chapter, expressing enthusiasm for continuing the IEM legacy with the world’s best gamers and fans on an even larger scale in Kraków. The multi-year agreement between ESL FaceIt Group and the city of Kraków ensures that IEM Kraków will become a recurring highlight in the global esports calendar.
This move reflects the growing expectations of the esports community for grander stages and immersive experiences. By shifting to Kraków, ESL FaceIt Group is not only expanding the tournament’s reach but also pushing the boundaries of live esports production, setting new standards for audience engagement and event execution.
