Huawei’s latest smartwatch, the Watch 5, introduces a significant advancement in health tracking technology by incorporating sensors not only on the wrist but also on the side of the device to measure vital metrics from the fingertip. This design innovation leverages the fingertip’s rich capillary network to improve the accuracy and speed of health data collection.

Dubbed “multi-sensing X-TAP technology,” the Watch 5 integrates a pressure sensor, an EKG electrode, and an optical heart rate sensor on its side. This setup allows for fingertip measurements of EKGs, blood oxygen levels, and arterial stiffness, delivering signal quality improvements ranging from 10 to 50 times compared to traditional wrist-based sensors.

One of the standout features enabled by this technology is the rapid blood oxygen (SpO2) reading, which takes just 10 seconds—significantly faster than most competitors. Additionally, the Watch 5 offers a comprehensive 60-second “one-tap health glance” that provides users with a snapshot of multiple health metrics, including average heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), skin temperature, stress levels, EKG, arterial stiffness, respiratory overview, and sleep disturbance awareness.

Beyond health tracking, the Watch 5 introduces new gesture controls such as double slide and double tap, enhancing user interaction. The display boasts a peak brightness of 3,000 nits with thinner bezels, available in two sizes—42mm and 46mm—with options in titanium and stainless steel. Battery life ranges from two to 4.5 days depending on the model and usage.

A notable aesthetic feature is the titanium 46mm model’s “purple” finish, achieved through advanced anodization techniques. While Huawei markets this as an exact purple with an opaline effect, some observers note it has a subtle blue-gray sheen rather than a vivid purple tone. Despite this, the color innovation highlights Huawei’s commitment to combining technology with style.

Currently, the Huawei Watch 5 is available for preorder in the UK and Europe, priced around $550. It supports cellular connectivity and is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, although it is not available in the US market.
