In a significant leap forward for wearable health technology, Google has announced the FDA clearance of the 'Loss of Pulse Detection' feature for its Pixel Watch 3, set to launch in the U.S. by the end of March. This innovative feature is designed to detect when a user's heart ceases to beat due to critical events such as primary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose, or poisoning. Upon detecting a loss of pulse, the watch prompts the user to confirm their well-being. If unresponsive, it automatically contacts emergency services, potentially saving lives.

Originally launched in the EU in September 2024, this feature is now available in 14 countries. Google's announcement at the previous year's Made by Google event highlighted the sophisticated AI-driven algorithm that underpins this feature. It integrates pulse monitoring with physiological and motion data to accurately assess pulse loss events. However, Google cautions that this feature is not foolproof and is not intended for individuals with preexisting heart conditions or those requiring continuous cardiac monitoring. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions nor provide follow-up care. The effectiveness of emergency calling is contingent on the device's charge and cellular connectivity.

The 'Loss of Pulse Detection' joins other safety and health features of the Pixel Watch, including Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications, and the ECG app. These features collectively position the Pixel Watch 3 as a comprehensive health monitoring device, leveraging cutting-edge AI technology to enhance user safety.
