Google Launches Stitch AI Tool for Effortless App UI Design and Coding

At the Google I/O 2025 developer conference, Google unveiled Stitch, an innovative AI-powered tool designed to simplify the creation of web and mobile app front ends. Stitch enables developers and designers to generate complete user interface elements and the corresponding HTML and CSS code by simply providing a few words or even an image as input.

Stitch leverages Google's advanced Gemini 2.5 AI models, offering users a choice between the Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash variants to power the code generation and interface ideation processes. This flexibility allows users to tailor the AI's output to their specific project needs and preferences.

Unlike some broader AI coding assistants, Stitch focuses specifically on front-end UI design, providing a streamlined experience that supports direct export to design tools like Figma. It also exposes the generated code for further refinement in integrated development environments (IDEs), empowering developers to iterate and customize their projects beyond the initial AI-generated output.

Google product manager Kathy Korevec demonstrated Stitch’s capabilities with examples including a responsive mobile UI for a book lovers’ app and a web dashboard for beekeeping management. Korevec emphasized that Stitch is designed to facilitate the initial design iteration, making it easier and more approachable for users to advance their design thinking and software building.

Looking ahead, Google plans to introduce a feature allowing users to modify UI designs by annotating screenshots of interface elements, streamlining iterative design changes without extensive manual coding. However, Stitch is not intended to replace comprehensive design platforms like Figma or Adobe XD but rather to complement them by accelerating early-stage UI development.

In parallel with Stitch, Google expanded access to Jules, an AI agent designed to assist developers in debugging and upgrading codebases. Now in public beta, Jules can analyze complex code, create GitHub pull requests, and automate tasks such as upgrading deprecated software versions. For example, Jules demonstrated upgrading a website from Node.js 16 to Node.js 22, including verification of functionality post-upgrade.

Both Stitch and Jules utilize the Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model, with plans to allow users to switch between different AI models in the future, providing flexibility and customization in AI-assisted software development workflows.

The Growing Role of AI in Front-End Development

Stitch exemplifies the emerging trend of vibe coding, where AI models generate code based on natural language prompts or visual inputs. This approach is gaining traction among startups and tech giants alike, with competitors like Anysphere, Cognition, Windsurf, OpenAI’s Codex, and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot advancing similar AI-assisted development tools.
