TalkBack, Google's screen reader launched in 2009, now integrates the Gemini AI model to provide richer, clearer image descriptions and interactive responses. Users can ask Gemini questions about images on their screen, such as details about a photo or product information during online shopping. This interactive capability enhances accessibility by delivering contextual information that was previously unavailable through traditional screen readers.

Expressive Captions Bring Nuanced Video Descriptions

The next version of Expressive Captions uses AI to convey speech intensity, elongated sounds, and ambient noises in videos and livestreams. For example, it can represent excitement with capitalized text or elongated words like “nooooo,” and identify sounds such as whistling or throat clearing. This enriches the viewing experience for users who rely on captions, making content more expressive and accessible.

Improved PDF Accessibility and Text Zoom in Chrome

Chrome now supports Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for scanned PDFs, enabling screen readers to interact with previously inaccessible documents. Users can highlight, copy, and search text within scanned PDFs seamlessly. Additionally, Chrome on Android introduces Page Zoom, allowing users to enlarge text without disrupting webpage layouts, enhancing readability and user experience.
