Garmin has unveiled its latest innovation in cycling safety technology, the Varia Vue, a groundbreaking addition to its Varia line. This device uniquely combines a powerful headlight with a front-facing 4K camera, designed to enhance cyclist safety by automatically recording incidents. The Varia Vue is priced at $549.99 and is available through Garmin’s online store and Amazon.

The Varia Vue features a 4K camera that captures high-definition video for up to six hours on a full charge. However, when the headlight is set to its brightest, battery life decreases to approximately 1.25 hours. By reducing the camera’s resolution to 1080P at 30fps, users can extend recording time to nine hours, or 1.5 hours with the headlight at full brightness. The headlight itself offers a maximum brightness of 600 lumens in a daytime flashing mode, with a continuous brightness of 550 lumens, and can be dimmed to 140 lumens for different lighting needs.

The Varia Vue is equipped with electronic image stabilization to ensure smooth footage, even on rough terrain. It continuously records, capturing events leading up to and following an incident, detected by its accelerometer. For enhanced functionality, the camera can be paired with Garmin’s smartwatches, cycling computers, or mobile app, integrating GPS speed and location data into the recordings.

To optimize battery life, the Varia Vue can connect with Garmin’s radar-equipped taillight, activating a mode where recording begins only when a vehicle approaches from behind. This feature allows incidents to be captured from multiple angles, providing comprehensive coverage.

Footage is stored locally on an SD card, but users can opt for automatic uploads to the Garmin Vault for added security, available with a subscription. The device can be operated via buttons on the camera, or remotely through Garmin’s smartphone app and cycling computers. Notably, Garmin has transitioned to a USB-C port for charging, moving away from the Micro USB ports used in previous models.

The Varia Vue represents a significant advancement in cycling safety technology, offering cyclists peace of mind through its innovative features and seamless integration with Garmin’s ecosystem. This device not only enhances visibility but also provides a reliable means of documenting incidents, contributing to safer cycling experiences.
