Framework Laptop 12 Launches as a Modular, Repairable Option

Framework, a pioneer in modular computing, has introduced the Framework Laptop 12, a 12-inch 2-in-1 touchscreen device aimed at revolutionizing entry-level laptops. Priced at $549 in the US, the Laptop 12 is more affordable than Framework's previous models, yet it remains pricier than typical entry-level laptops and Chromebooks. This cost does not include storage, memory, ports, or an operating system, which can elevate the price to €849, £749, or $1,079 CAD for pre-installed configurations.

Despite the higher price point, Framework's offering is unique due to its focus on repairability and modularity. Users can upgrade components like the motherboard, ensuring longevity and adaptability. This approach aligns with Framework's commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness over time, as users can replace parts instead of entire devices.

The Laptop 12 features a six-core 13th Gen Intel Core i3-1315U processor, with an option to upgrade to a 10-core i5-1334U. It supports both Windows and Linux operating systems, and while it currently ships in black, the DIY version offers customizable colors, including mint and pink.

Framework's strategy is to provide a laptop that not only meets the needs of tech enthusiasts who value upgradability but also appeals to environmentally conscious consumers. The company has yet to release its color-matched stylus, but it supports USI 2.0 and MPP 2.0-compatible styluses, broadening its usability.

The Framework Laptop 12 is set to ship in June and July for DIY and prebuilt models, respectively. This launch marks a significant step in Framework's mission to redefine the budget laptop market by offering a product that balances performance, design, and sustainability.
