The Counter Blitz Commander Deck features a re-flavored card, Inspiring Call, capturing Yuna and Tidus’ memorable forced laughter moment. This crossover set celebrates Final Fantasy’s legacy with thematic cards and mechanics inspired by the series, launching June 13, 2025.
Wizards of the Coast has unveiled more details about their highly anticipated Final Fantasy crossover set for Magic: The Gathering, revealing a treasure trove of cards that pay homage to the rich history of the Final Fantasy franchise. Among these is a standout inclusion from Final Fantasy X, immortalizing the game’s famous laughing scene as a Magic card.
The crossover features four preconstructed Commander Decks, each themed around a major Final Fantasy title: Revival Trance (Final Fantasy VI), Limit Break (Final Fantasy VII), Counter Blitz (Final Fantasy X), and Scions and Spellcraft (Final Fantasy XIV). Each deck contains 100 cards, blending new creations with reimagined Magic cards featuring new artwork and thematic flavor.
In the Counter Blitz deck, the card Inspiring Call—a green instant originally from Dragons of Tarkir—has been re-flavored to capture the iconic forced laughter scene between Yuna and Tidus. This moment, where Yuna encourages Tidus to mask his pain with laughter during their perilous pilgrimage, has become a beloved meme within the Final Fantasy community. The card’s flavor text and art pay tribute to this memorable scene, blending nostalgia with gameplay.
Beyond this humorous nod, the Final Fantasy set includes numerous cards with mechanics and themes that resonate deeply with their source games. For example, the Final Fantasy VII deck features a Zack Fair card that mirrors Cloud’s storyline, while the Final Fantasy XIV deck includes Champions from Beyond, referencing the MMORPG’s party finder mechanic. These thoughtful designs demonstrate the passion and reverence behind this crossover.
The Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy set is set to launch on June 13, 2025, offering fans of both franchises a unique opportunity to experience their favorite characters and moments in a new format. This collaboration highlights how iconic game narratives can be reimagined through innovative card design, enriching the player experience and expanding the storytelling potential of tabletop games.
This crossover exemplifies the growing trend of blending digital and analog gaming cultures, leveraging nostalgia and fan engagement to create compelling new products. It also serves as a case study in how game developers and publishers can collaborate to cross-pollinate audiences and expand their creative horizons.
