Epic Games Launches Fortnite Data API for Creator Insights
Epic Games has introduced the Fortnite Data API, providing public access to key engagement and retention metrics for Fortnite islands. This API offers data like total playtime, session counts, favorites, and retention rates, initially for Epic-made islands, with plans to include all creator islands soon. The data is accessible without authentication and supports deeper analysis for creators.
Epic Games has taken a significant step toward data transparency and creator empowerment by launching the Fortnite Data API. This new tool opens up a wealth of player engagement and retention metrics for Fortnite islands, providing creators with valuable insights into what drives player success and satisfaction.
The API currently offers data points such as total minutes played by all players, average minutes per unique player, number of game sessions, favorites, recommendations (previously known as "Likes"), peak concurrent players, distinct player counts, and retention metrics measured day-over-day and week-over-week.
What makes this API particularly accessible is that it is publicly available without requiring any authentication, allowing developers and analysts to tap into up to seven days of data for third-party analysis and insights.
Initially, the data covers islands created by Epic Games itself, including Fortnite Battle Royale. However, starting June 9, the API will expand to include all creator-made islands, democratizing data access across the Fortnite ecosystem. Notably, creators cannot opt out of this data sharing, ensuring uniform transparency.
This initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward open data and analytics, enabling creators to refine their content based on real player behavior. By understanding engagement patterns and retention drivers, developers can craft more compelling experiences that resonate with their audience.
Key Data Points Available Through the Fortnite Data API

By making these metrics publicly accessible, Epic Games is fostering a data-driven environment where creators can analyze trends, benchmark performance, and innovate based on player behavior. This transparency could reshape how content is developed and optimized within Fortnite’s vibrant ecosystem.
Looking ahead, Epic Games plans to share more about the API’s capabilities and use cases at Unreal Fest in Orlando, signaling ongoing enhancements and deeper integration possibilities for creators.
For developers and creators eager to leverage data for game design and player engagement, the Fortnite Data API represents a powerful new resource. It’s a prime example of how open data can fuel creativity and strategic decision-making in gaming.
