DoorDash Expands Automated Deliveries with Sidewalk Robots

DoorDash is revolutionizing the delivery landscape by integrating sidewalk robots into its existing delivery ecosystem in the United States. This move is part of DoorDash's strategic partnership with Coco, a leading sidewalk robot manufacturer, aiming to enhance delivery efficiency and sustainability. Currently operational in Los Angeles and Chicago, these robots are set to collaborate with nearly 600 merchants, offering a novel way to deliver meals and goods to customers.

Harrison Shih, senior director of DoorDash Labs, highlighted the company's ambition to become a 'multi-modal' platform, emphasizing that not every delivery requires a large vehicle. This initiative aligns with DoorDash's broader strategy to diversify its delivery methods, which also includes human drivers and drone deliveries in collaboration with Alphabet's Wing.

The deployment of these robots is not without its challenges. Companies like Serve Robotics, which also collaborates with Uber Eats, have established teams to monitor and assist these robots in case of operational issues or vandalism. Despite these challenges, DoorDash has already completed over 100,000 deliveries worldwide using Coco robots during its pilot phase.

This expansion into automated delivery not only positions DoorDash at the forefront of delivery innovation but also reflects a growing trend in the industry towards more sustainable and efficient delivery solutions.
