Creating Magic with 3D Printing and Projection Technology

3D printing has opened up a world of possibilities, from simple repairs to intricate artistic projects. As a professional tester of 3D printers, I have access to machines of various sizes, allowing me to explore their capabilities extensively. Recently, I embarked on a personal project that combined my love for Disney with the power of 3D printing and projection technology. Inspired by a TikTok video, I decided to recreate the Disneyland castle using the Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga, a massive 3D printer that is ideal for large-scale projects. The goal was to project a fireworks display onto the 3D-printed castle, reminiscent of the magical experiences at Disney parks.

The Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga is a formidable machine with a build area of 800 by 800 by 1,000mm, making it suitable for ambitious projects. However, its complexity and size make it impractical for hobbyists without ample space and patience. Despite these challenges, I was determined to bring my vision to life. I adjusted the 3D model of the Disneyland castle to fit my specifications, removing unnecessary elements and scaling it up to 700mm across. The printing process took over 85 hours and required a significant amount of material, but the result was a robust and impressive structure.

To prepare the castle for projection, I used automotive primer filler and stone effect spray paint to achieve a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish. The projection itself was a crucial aspect of the project. Using an Xgimi Elfin projector, I found a video that matched my criteria, capturing the nostalgia of the Disneyland fireworks display. Adjusting the keystone correction on the projector allowed me to align the image with the 3D model, although achieving perfection would require multiple projectors or advanced equipment.

This project not only showcased the capabilities of 3D printing and projection technology but also reignited my passion for creativity. It demonstrated how technology can bring personal memories to life, creating a unique and immersive experience. As I continue to refine the project, I am considering adding artificial clouds to enhance the visual effect and exploring more advanced projection options.
