Blackmagic Design, a prominent Australian digital cinematography camera company, is grappling with the financial implications of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Initially planning to establish a production facility in Dallas, Texas, Blackmagic aimed to streamline its supply chain and collaborate closely with US semiconductor companies. However, the introduction of global tariffs has disrupted these plans, making US production financially unviable.

The tariffs have forced Blackmagic to increase prices in the US to offset the levies on imported goods. Despite sourcing semiconductor parts and PCBs from US companies, these components are often imported from overseas, subjecting them to tariffs. This situation creates a paradox where moving production to the US does not necessarily result in cost savings, as anticipated.

A CNBC supply chain survey revealed that 61 percent of businesses would benefit financially from relocating to countries with lower tariffs rather than the US. Furthermore, 81 percent of companies considering a move to the US indicated they would automate production, contradicting the promise of new manufacturing jobs.

Blackmagic customers have already experienced price hikes, with the Pyxis 12K camera initially priced at $5,000, later listed at $6,600, and now adjusted to $5,500 after relocating production to mitigate tariff impacts. Prices outside the US remain unaffected.

Blackmagic's strategy involves waiting to see if the supply chain for essential components will shift to the US, potentially allowing them to achieve their supply chain goals. While recent exemptions for smartphones and computers have been announced, cameras and related equipment remain subject to tariffs, with future changes expected.
