Apple’s $95 Million Siri Settlement Offers Compensation for Privacy Concerns
Apple has agreed to a $95 million settlement in the Lopez v. Apple lawsuit, addressing allegations that Siri recorded private conversations without user consent. Eligible US users with Siri-enabled devices from 2014 to 2024 can claim up to $100 by July 2, 2025. This settlement highlights ongoing concerns about voice assistant privacy and user data protection.
Apple has reached a significant $95 million settlement in the Lopez v. Apple lawsuit, which centers on allegations that the company’s Siri voice assistant recorded private conversations without user consent and shared them with third-party contractors. This case has brought renewed attention to privacy concerns surrounding voice-activated technologies and the protection of user data.
The lawsuit, filed in 2019, claimed that Siri sometimes activated unintentionally during private conversations on devices such as iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, HomePods, and Macs. Apple has denied the allegations but agreed to the settlement earlier in 2025 to resolve the dispute.
Users in the United States who owned a Siri-enabled device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and experienced Siri activating seemingly on its own during private conversations are eligible to claim compensation. The settlement allows for up to $100 per claimant, calculated as $20 per eligible device for up to five devices.
Claimants must submit their claims by July 2, 2025, through the official settlement website. Notifications have been sent via email from info@lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com, containing claimant identification and confirmation codes.
Broader Implications for Voice Assistant Privacy
This settlement underscores the growing scrutiny of voice assistant technologies and their impact on user privacy. As voice-activated devices become ubiquitous, ensuring transparent data handling and robust privacy safeguards is critical for maintaining consumer trust and complying with evolving regulations.
Developers and businesses integrating voice assistants must prioritize privacy by design, implement clear user consent mechanisms, and regularly audit data sharing practices. This case serves as a cautionary tale and a call to action for the tech industry to elevate privacy standards.
