Apple Unveils iOS 26 with Liquid Glass Design and Smarter Features

At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled iOS 26, a major rebranding and redesign of the iPhone’s operating system set to launch this fall alongside the iPhone 17. This update introduces the striking new Liquid Glass interface, which emphasizes translucency and dynamic adaptability, inspired by the VisionOS design language used in the Vision Pro headset.

A New Era of Visual Design with Liquid Glass

After more than a decade of flat, clean UI introduced in iOS 7, iOS 26 shifts to a translucent, glass-like aesthetic that dynamically morphs based on context. The Liquid Glass design lets interface elements blend and adapt fluidly, such as lock screen numerals resizing to accommodate background images or notifications. This design language extends across iOS, WatchOS, TVOS, and iPadOS, creating a cohesive Apple ecosystem experience.

iOS 26 also introduces an "All Clear" home screen icon mode where app icons appear as clear glass without color, complementing existing Light and Dark modes. Lock screens gain enhanced 3D depth effects powered by machine learning, adding spatial richness to background photos.

Streamlined Apps for Simplicity and Functionality

Apple has revamped core apps to match the minimalistic yet dynamic Liquid Glass style. The Camera app now features a simplified interface with just two main controls—Video and Camera—while settings are accessed via intuitive swipes, reducing clutter and distractions.

The Photos app gains a Liquid Glass menu at the bottom for easier navigation, replacing the previous cumbersome scrolling interface. The Phone app adopts a unified layout that better utilizes larger screens and introduces smart call management features like Call Screening and Hold Assist to reduce unwanted interruptions.

Messages now supports colorful, dynamic chat backgrounds and group polls, making conversations more engaging and organized. It also improves spam detection and unknown number screening to keep your messaging experience focused and distraction-free.

Safari's interface floats the tab bar above content, shrinking it on scroll to maximize screen space, while FaceTime minimizes controls during calls to keep the focus on conversations. A new Games app consolidates Apple Arcade and other games into a dedicated hub, acknowledging the iPhone’s huge gaming audience.

Powerful AI Enhancements and Live Translation

Building on Apple Intelligence, iOS 26 introduces live translation features across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps, enabling near-real-time language translation during conversations. The Image Playground app integrates ChatGPT-powered image generation, while Visual Intelligence can analyze screenshots to extract text or create calendar events, enhancing productivity.

Other AI-driven improvements include combining emojis to create expressive Genmoji and smarter Reminders that suggest tasks based on email and text content.

Additional Features and Accessibility

iOS 26 also brings lesser-highlighted features such as AirPods Camera Remote for video recording, customizable alarm snooze durations, and enhanced audio recording quality with AirPods Pro H2 chip. Accessibility improvements include a redesigned experience for Braille users and expanded motion sickness options.

The Journal app now supports multiple journals, inline images, and map views tracking entry locations. Parental controls have been updated with enhanced communication limits and safety features.

Availability and Compatibility

iOS 26 will be released in September or October 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 lineup. Developers have immediate access to the developer beta, with a public beta expected in July. The update supports iPhone 11 and later models, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer).
