Apple's iOS 18.5 update, released ahead of WWDC, introduces a dynamic new Pride wallpaper, easier Mail app customization with contact photo toggling, and satellite messaging support for iPhone 13 models via T-Mobile Starlink. Apple released iOS 18.5 on May 12, shortly before its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, where iOS 19 is expected to be unveiled. This update builds on iOS 18.4, focusing on subtle but meaningful improvements that enhance user experience and security across supported iPhones.

New Pride Wallpaper and Visual Updates

Continuing its tradition ahead of Pride Month, Apple introduced the "Pride Harmony" wallpaper in iOS 18.5. This dynamic wallpaper features bold stripes that shift and change position as the device moves, offering a vibrant and interactive visual experience that celebrates inclusivity.

Mail App Enhancements for Streamlined Communication

iOS 18.5 makes it easier to customize the Mail app by allowing users to toggle contact photos directly within the app. This option, previously buried in settings, helps declutter the inbox for a cleaner look. Additionally, a new small tab for the "All Mail" category improves navigation, enabling users to view uncategorized emails alongside categorized ones.

Satellite Messaging Support Expands to iPhone 13

A significant feature of iOS 18.5 is the extension of satellite messaging capabilities to all iPhone 13 models. This allows users to send messages even when off the grid, enhancing safety and connectivity. Currently, this feature is carrier-dependent and available via T-Mobile’s Starlink beta in the US, with plans for broader carrier support and subscription models later in the year.

Accessibility and Security Improvements

The update introduces a new banner option for the Back Tap accessibility feature, providing visual confirmation when users double- or triple-tap the back of their iPhone. Additionally, iOS 18.5 includes important bug fixes, security patches, and enhancements such as notifications for parents when a child's Screen Time passcode is used, and fixes for the Apple Vision Pro app black screen issue.

Users can update to iOS 18.5 by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update and following the on-screen prompts. While the update offers modest feature additions, its focus on usability, inclusivity, and security underscores Apple’s commitment to refining the iOS experience ahead of the anticipated iOS 19 release.
