Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI as Top Enterprise AI Provider
Anthropic’s AI models have surged to 32% of enterprise large language model usage, overtaking OpenAI’s 25% share. Since 2023, enterprises have flocked to Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 and 3.7 Sonnet releases, driving its coding market lead of 42% versus OpenAI’s 21%. Closed AI models now dominate business deployments.
Anthropic Emerges as Enterprise AI Leader
In a surprising shift, AI research lab Anthropic has claimed the top spot in enterprise large language model usage, surpassing OpenAI. A Menlo Ventures report released Thursday shows Anthropic now holds 32% of the market, while OpenAI trails at 25%.
Just two years ago, OpenAI dominated with 50% share compared to Anthropic’s 12%. The pendulum has swung sharply since 2023 as Anthropic’s Claude model series won enterprise favor.
When it comes to coding, Anthropic leads by an even wider margin: 42% versus OpenAI’s 21%. Enterprises are more than twice as likely to deploy Claude for development tasks.
The Claude Effect
Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet release in June 2024 marked the turning point. Its successor, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, launched in February 2025, only accelerated enterprise adoption with richer context handling and security features.
Closed Models Reign Supreme
According to Menlo Ventures, over half of enterprises now avoid open source AI entirely. Only 13% of daily workloads run on open source models, down from 19% at the start of 2025. Meta remains the top open source provider.
Enterprises cite security, compliance and vendor support as reasons to choose closed systems. Think of it like preferring a private jet over a shared flight: more control, less risk.
- Release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet sparked initial adoption
- Claude 3.7 Sonnet accelerated usage with advanced features
- Enterprises favor closed, secure models over open source
