Anthropic has unveiled its new Claude for Education tier, designed to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu plan. This innovative offering targets higher education, providing students, faculty, and staff with access to Anthropic's AI chatbot, Claude, enhanced with additional capabilities. A key feature of Claude for Education is 'Learning Mode,' which encourages the development of critical thinking skills by prompting users with questions to test their understanding, highlighting fundamental principles, and offering templates for research papers and study guides.

This strategic move is part of Anthropic's plan to increase its revenue, which currently stands at $115 million per month, with ambitions to double by 2025. The company is directly challenging OpenAI in the education sector, historically matching its offerings. Claude for Education includes a standard chat interface and 'enterprise-grade' security and privacy controls.

Anthropic has partnered with Instructure, the provider of the popular education software platform Canvas, and Internet2, a nonprofit delivering cloud solutions for colleges, to integrate Claude into university systems. Full campus agreements have already been established with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Champlain College, making Claude for Education accessible to all students at these institutions.

Northeastern University serves as a design partner, collaborating with Anthropic to develop best practices for AI integration and AI-powered education tools. The company aims to secure more contracts through student ambassador and AI 'builder' programs, capitalizing on the increasing use of AI in academic settings. A survey by the Digital Education Council revealed that 54% of university students utilize generative AI weekly.

While the impact of AI on education remains uncertain, with mixed research on its effects on critical thinking skills, Anthropic's Claude for Education seeks to familiarize young users with its tools, supported by well-funded universities. This initiative positions Anthropic as a formidable player in the AI education landscape, offering a robust alternative to OpenAI's solutions.
